Trip to Boston

Last week, we took advantage of the long weekend (Rosh Hashanah) to extend our annual trip to MA, to include Boston. We picked up Caroline on the way, and spent the late afternoon in Harvard. The campus was beautiful, as was the weather, and we had a great time seeing the sites, even when Tom Green heckled Caroline. We met Helen in the evening to have some great ice cream at Christina’s, and left the 3 girls with her, while Mama & Papa stayed the night in a nearby hotel.

The next morning we met Helen, Melinda (another TKDr) and the girls for breakfast at Friendly Toast in Cambridge (very retro decor, like way back when Papa was a kid 🙂 )  then headed on to the Freedom Trail.  It was a lot of walking – from Boston Commons to Old North Church – but the girls were troopers. We treated ourselves to some great food, like CHOWDA @ Quincy Market, and pastries @ Mike’s Pastries, then finished the trail at the new Holocaust Memorial, which was a very moving experience for all.  We took the “T” back to the car, and left to get back for Liz’s b-day celebration.  The next day, the girls hung out with Caroline & Elizabeth creating some movies, and Mama & Pap went on to the TKD event.

Schofield Bridge En Plein Air

Schofield Bridge @ Tyler ParkThe girls decided to make Saturday an artistic day out, so we drove over to Tyler Park and had an afternoon of “plein air” drawing & painting. While Papa typically thinks that four hours spent staring at a bridge to draw and paint would be better spent doing some sort of house project, he relished the time with his family doing something that that he enjoyed very much when he was younger.

In fact the whole holiday weekend was spent doing crafts with the family; starting with the art on Saturday; to apple picking and pie baking; carving the other pumpkin from our garden for our Sunday dinner party (it wouldn’t wait until Halloween 🙁 but will soon be pumpkin soup); carving a gourd into a bird house; and painting a wooden bird house.

That’s a pretty full weekend, but then again, the day is only half over … who knows what more we’ll do today 🙂

First Day of School

Today was the first day of school for the girls, and the first day of Middle School for Gabriella. To say she was nervous would be an understatement! She got herself up at 6:40am and without any caffeine, was shaking at the breakfast table. Unfortunately, the school has no air conditioning, and it was a record high 97° :(  Both had a great day anyway, but are a little tired right now … let’s see if they’re as excited to get up tomorrow.

Sylvia Comes to Ocean City

Gull in the Action* Warning, this post has graphic descriptions.

Gabriella’s best friend, Sylvia, joined us for our last trip to OC for the summer this past weekend, and we packed in as much excitement as we could. We started with an evening on the beach, with another golden sunset, followed by a moonlit walk on the beach while enjoying some Kessel’s Ice Cream 🙂

The next day we went crabbing where we came home with 2 crabs, and one EEL! Another family pulled up a 20″ long eel in their crab trap, and Papa wrestled it into our live-well. It was quite a struggle, and afterward, Papa was left with most of the eel’s skin stuck to his hands :(  The struggle continued when we got home, where three of us wrestled w/the eel to kill it (not an easy task) and flay the skin.  Even with the head removed, the body continued to wrap around Mama’s arm. (btw, it was delicious!) Later in the day we enjoyed some killer waves, and tons of sun.

Our last day we took Sylvia fishing, and living up to her name, she pulled in more fish than any of us. Collectively, the girls caught an eel, a spot, a robin fish, and a shark.  It was the shark that Sylvia wanted to catch, but unfortunately there was a gentleman in charge of the docks who thought he’d be ‘cute’ with it, and taunted her with the shark while Mama was taking a picture. The shark got his revenge by bleeding on Sylvia’s top, and put a damper on the rest of the outing.  We made up for it later in the day, with another great afternoon in the ocean.

Photo Shoot / Ocean City, NJ

If you are ever on the Ocean City beach during the “golden hour” you are bound to see groups of people at every block taking family pictures in the golden light.  In case you didn’t know, Papa ‘dabbles’ in photography, so  it was inevitable that the Macera’s would take their turn. This evening it wasn’t particularly golden, but we still got some beautiful shots (how could Papa not, working with such beautiful models 🙂 )

Ocean City Fishin

On Friday morning, the family got up at 6am to go fishing. While we didn’t bring any ‘keepers’ home, the girls enjoyed reeling in a few sand (dogfish) sharks. The highlight of the morning, was watching a nine year old boy nearly get dragged into the bay by a huge skate. His dad had to help him haul it in, and it took almost 10 minutes.

This morning, we got up early to go crabbing, with only a little success.  We caught 4 keepers, and Mama’s preparing them now w/some squid for a fish sauce … yum! Despite the modest returns, it was a beautiful morning, except when Papa yelled a few expletives, as one of the crabs got a hold of his finger :(  .

Bounty!

BOUNTY
OK, so 1/2 of the garden was devoured by vermin, but they didn’t get our TOMATOES! We’ve been watching them ripen for MONTHS, and finally we are reaping the rewards, all be it in one day.  Here’s a shot of what Mama picked from the garden this morning … along with our ‘prized pumpkin’ 🙂

and the peppers are looking good too!

Zia’s Birthday Celebration

Everyone gathered Saturday to celebrate Zia’s birthday (don’t ask which one 🙂 )  The theme of the party was “Japan” – not sure why, just an excuse to wear a kimono I guess. The girls spent a couple hours applying their makeup and Gabriella brought another masterful cake creation following the Japan theme. Here are some pics from Papa’s camera.

Pumpkins in AUGUST!

In August you say? Well, we thought they were stray zucchini plants growing in our garden this spring, so we let them grow … and grow is what they did! There were about 4 plants originally, but one soon showed his dominance, and was soon 10 feet long. In an effort to contain it, Papa trained it up a 6 foot tall trellis. Of all the plants, three pumpkins grew, but one was found rotten from the bottom. Gabriella insisted we pick this one (there is still a smaller green one on the vine) before the weather, or the local critters, do it in. She has grand plans for this prized pumpkin … we are all looking forward to some of Mama’s wonderful soup!

The ZOO with Zia & Nonno

On Friday, Zia (Rosaria) took the girls to the Philadelphia Zoo with Nonno, in celebration of his 81st birthday. The goal was to ride in the Channel 6 Balloon as well as ride the camels. Unfortunately, it was too windy for the balloon, and Nonno’s hip’s couldn’t get around the Camel’s back, but Zia & the girls were able to mount the beasts. They enjoyed every other activity offered there, and their high point was interacting with the gorilla who waved & blew kisses. Here are a few pictures (of the many) that Elisa took.
